From magnum, this is in its early drinking window with superb balance and a developing complexity. Much more Old World than New World to my taste. Superb.

Decanted two hours before lunch and paired with roast lamb. Poured a small glass on opening which showed a hint of age in appearance and had a whiff of brett that blew off quickly. Incredible concentration on the palate with more secondary than primary flavours and a very long finish.

At lunch this was really singing, with a great range of aromas and flavours and a beautiful smoothness on the palate. A very good bottle of a very good wine.

This was our one and only bottle of this wine bought a couple of years ago from a private cellar which of course is not without risk. I have no point of comparison and have never had a champagne this old but we loved it. The cork came out in one with a slight ‘phst’, the wine had a nice golden colour and a fine mousse with lovely cooked apple and secondary flavours and the finish was very long.

Opened 90 minutes before lunch but not decanted. Tasted upon opening and was ready to go, although the additional time before lunch allowed it to open up a little. Delicious sappy black fruits, nice tannic grip but not over powering, lovely secondary flavours and aromas. A really well balanced wine that is in a great place with lovely flavours and structure without being too much.

This went down a treat with our roast beef for Sunday lunch. Opened an hour before lunch and left to breathe. Lots of fruit on both nose and palate along with a touch of graphite and leather. Still quite fresh but well into its drinking window, although still lots of time ahead of it too. Definitely one of those wines you wish you had more of.

1/6. Wanted to give this a try in its youth in the knowledge that it would likely be early days which it was. On the nose there is peach, flowers and pepper. On the palate there is quite a bit of weight, citrus, a touch of peach, pepper and searing acidity. On the first day the acidity was a bit overwhelming but by the second day that had mellowed slightly giving an indication of what this is going to be like down the road. Fantastic quality but definitely worth leaving this for at least another couple of years before trying again.

3/6. 2-hour decant ahead of drinking with fish n’chips. No signs of age, powerful aromas of oak, smoke and dark fruits. Lovely concentration of dark fruits on the palate, lots of tannic structure, high acidity. A well balanced wine of excellent quality with a long life ahead of it.

This was our first bottle of this wine and I’m really not sure what to make of it. In appearance the wine is the colour of molasses and is incredibly viscous. On the nose there is banana, brown sugar and treacle. On the palate the wine is very viscous and of course is very sweet. Molasses is the dominant flavour but there are other more complex flavours lurking and there is also acidity to provide an element of balance to the high sugar levels. I will revisit in the coming days to see if anything changes but I’m unclear if this bottle is as it should be. I enjoyed drinking it but couldn’t help but feel it might be better poured over a steam pudding as a sauce.

2/6. This is developing nicely with freshness, acidity and citrus/stone/tropical fruits on the one hand and the creamy and buttery texture of good Chardonnay on the other, the latter being more prominent than in our first bottle. This is a high quality wine but I think it really needs more time to come together and show its true potential. The trouble is leaving it alone long enough to get to that point!

After a slightly funky bottle last month I was keen to try another and see if the old magic was still there which it was in spades. This bottle was deep in colour with no real signs of age. The aromas really rose from the bottle on decanting with lots of dark fruit, liquorice and tar. On the palate these aromas appeared as flavours with lovely tannic grip, plenty of acidity and good balance. In theory this has plenty of time left but is in a really good place now so I suspect I will drink my remaining bottles over the next couple of years in the hope that they are good bottles. Drunk with roast chicken dinner.

Deep and fresh in appearance. Bordeaux meets Northern Rhône on the nose with blackcurrant, blackberries, a touch of black olive and a whiff of oak. On the palate the black fruits are not as distinct as on the nose and there is also cedar and spice. Medium to full bodied, plenty of tannic structure, medium to high acidity. Very smooth with a medium finish. We drank this with no decant over 3-4 hours, first with roast lamb and then by itself. In many ways this is still quite primary but the complexity is beginning to develop. This is a really nice wine that is excellent value for money.

We gave this a 5-hour double decant before drinking with our roast chicken dinner for Sunday lunch. The colour is deep, healthy and fresh with no signs of age. On the nose there are black fruits, blackberry in particular, cedar, tobacco, leather and spice. On the palate the wine is sappy with juicy fruits that are more red than black and there is good concentration to them. There is huge tannic structure but it is not obtrusive. There is also bags of acidity but it sits well with the other components. The wine is medium bodied and has a long finish that just keeps on lingering, revealing further flavours in the process.

We all loved this and it is ready to go with a long decant but given the structure will of course benefit from further bottle ageing. What a wine!!

A year on from our last bottle, this one had quite a bit of funk on the nose on opening and took quite a while to dissipate and subside. On the palate this wine still has lots of acidity and is very tannic with dark fruit flavours that are cooked rather than fresh. Not up to the level of the previous bottle but having said that it did pair really well with the duck Ragu we drank it with.

2011 San Giusto a Rentennano Chianti Classico Riserva Le Baroncole

Chianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese Blend, Sangiovese more

7/25/2021 - mtarrant003 Likes this wine: 92 points

Decanted an hour before lunch and drunk with roast beef. Dark fruits and cedar on the nose but not giving too much away initially. Lovely concentrated flavours of black fruits, cedar and spice on the palate. Lots of acidity, tannins are smooth and even though the label states 15% abv we certainly didn’t notice this. This wine still feels quite austere even with the one hour decant suggesting this has plenty of evolution yet to come and that a longer decant is probably sensible at this point.

It’s possibly not fair to compare across vintages but the 2013 Chianti Classico we had from SGAR earlier in the week was on a par with this and was in some sense more delicious. I guess we need to try the 2013 Baroncole to get more of a sense of how the two wines compare.

This was our first bottle of the 2016 having tried our first bottle of the 2015 last year. Deep in colour. Blackberry, bacon fat and olive tapenade on the nose. On the palate, plum, cedar, black olive and a touch of herbs. Initially this is very oaky but with air that dissipates. Good acidity, pleasant tannic grip, very smooth on the palate. Medium finish. Well balanced. With some air this is open for business but it certainly more primary than the 2015 was at the same stage. Interesting to compare the 2016 which shows more black olive and bacon fat compared to the 2015 which had a bit more fruit and Garrigue. Is going to be very enjoyable over the next decade.

Blackberry, mint, tobacco and leather on the nose. Tart black fruit on the palate along with some cedar. Quite concentrated but at the same time not heavy. Smooth tannins, bags of acidity, medium finish. Drunk over three days with T-bone steak, sausages and pasta in tomato sauce. Really impressive and excellent value for money.

Our last bottle from a six pack which we were pleased to be able to drink as the last two bottles have been flawed. Pear, honeysuckle and blossom on the nose, quite fragrant but not aromatic. Peach, pear and a touch of salinity on the palate, acidity is quite high. Good weight, short to medium finish. A very pleasant, albeit quite subtle, wine. Drunk with fish n’chips and then by itself.

Almost a year since our last bottle. Black fruit, cedar and floral notes on the nose. Soft, sappy rich fruit on the palate but with a touch of spice that I don’t typically experience or associate with Merlot so presumably is down to the terrior as the oak already seems to be fully integrated. Good weight on the palate with smooth tannins and a long lingering finish. This is at least as good as it was almost a year ago and I stand by my previous comment that there is plenty more to come over the next decade. Opened an hour before dinner but not decanted and drunk with roast lamb.

Continues to be understated on the nose. Lovely stone fruit flavours on the palate with good weight and a medium finish. I didn’t think much of this wine when I first tried it a couple of years ago but it has developed some complexity and interest since then and is now very enjoyable.

Straw coloured. Lemon, pear and floral notes on the nose which is fresh. Citrus and stony on the palate with a lingering finish and a pleasant after taste of wheat beer. Lots of acidity adds to the freshness but there is also quite a bit of weight to the palate and a real sense of body. Drunk over two days, showing more character and complexity on the second. Will be interesting to see how this ages.

Deep amber in colour. Marzipan and marmalade on the nose. Unctuous on the palate but maybe less so than in the past. There is balancing acidity so the wine is not cloying in the mouth. Flavours of honey and orange marmalade on the palate. Not much in the way of complexity but delicious and easy drinking. Drunk over a couple of nights with steamed treacle pudding, various cheeses and by itself.
