Got so excited about the 1990 Montrose the other week that I had to try one of the 89s again. Whilst also a very big and opulent wine, it is just not hitting the high notes that the 90 seem to do, also some acid notes keep atttacking the palate.

Hard to fault anything in 89 HB, as it got everything I look for in a wine. Nose, aromatics, mouth feel and complexity, and it feels like it got plenty life ahead.

Miles away from the finished product, still very primary and hot. Sure the back bone is there in fruit and structure, but wouldn't touch another bottle for 10 years.

Feels more like Napa than Tuscany. Absolutely packed with fruit, but pulls it off without being jammy as there are some prominent acidity around, very very 2003, you can feel the heatwave from the ripeness of the fruit. Wife loves it, but I prefer the 2000.

This wine has filled out since i last had it, very thick oily texture, defintely a food wine. Actually think i preferred it younger, just a bit too rich now with burnt toffee, butterscotch and less fresh acidity.

Drunk with slow roasted leg of lamb for lunch. Lovely restained elegance, delivers up dark fruit with sweet tobacco, leather and hints of cedar. Got better and better with decanting time, lovely.

Blockbuster of a wine that still fels incredibly young at age 16... Felt it very similar to the 96. Had more of everything next to the Latour from the same year, both showed beautifully, but with the Harlan you get more fruit, concentration, complexity and length.

Held it's own vs a Harlan from the same year. Kept gettng better in the glass despite a long decant, still quite a lot of oak present I thought, red berries and cedar, next to the Harlan this was much lighter in colour and did not have the massive concentration an complexity of the american wine, but found the Latour to be slightly more refined.

What a surprise after the last bottle So it's true, BV stands for bottle variation, unlike the other, this bottle was full of nice plummy fruit with a beautiful nose. Very nice a silky in mouth, at peak.
