1/24/2024 - SwindonPaul Likes this wine: NR16%! 16%!! Obviously a huge wine and let's be honest, the alcohol is the overwhelming feature here and probably always will be. Small amount of sediment, nothing crazy. And nothing to speak about on the nose, just a vague danger to your nostrils due to the high alcohol. However - if you can look past this - there's some lovely fruit here which spares it the indignity of being dumped down the drain, more than spares it in fact. Note to self, pay more attention to the alcohol level in future. Drink now and in the next three years - I doubt this is going to evolve much. |

2/25/2023 - SwindonPaul Likes this wine: 91 pointsIntense on day 1, mellowed on day 2. Suggest that this will peak around the 10-year mark based on the tannic structure. Drink now thru 2030+ |

2/20/2023 - SwindonPaul Likes this wine: 86 pointsDrank over 3 days. Right on the edge of my personal limits of enjoyment, this has a distinct vegetal and savoury style which I can just about tolerate; very cabernet franc even though I doubt there's much - if at all - in the blend. Nowt wrong with the winemaking, my 86 will undoubtedly be someone else's 90 according to personal preference. |

2/6/2023 - SwindonPaul Likes this wine: 88 pointsPerhaps a reminder of why vintage matters. Smelt and tasted like Bordeaux, but lighter in colour, body and power than what you might expect. You could almost chill this down and quaff on a hot summer's day, were you not still going to get slapped around by what remains of the tannic structure (which to be fair has faded mostly into the background). |

1/20/2023 - SwindonPaul Likes this wine: 92 pointsAbsolutely delicious chardonnay from SA. Everything harmoniously in balance. Sure, it's not the most complex or the most fragrant, but damn, did it go down a treat. £32 from Oxford Wine Company, UK. |

12/28/2022 - SwindonPaul Does not like this wine: NREvery now and again, you come across a wine that just isn't to your taste. Heavily on the savoury, rather than fruity side, this is quite austere and, for me, hard work even after throwing it into the decanter and revisting on day 2. I wonder if its the blend as even on the nose it's a little different to the usual Southern France archetypes. Oh well. |

11/26/2022 - SwindonPaul Likes this wine: 93 pointsStill so fresh and vibrant after 21 years! The biggest compliment I can give is that I can't resist going back for another glass even though there's not one element I can point to as being standout. Superb balance and bless Rioja for sticking to their traditions. |

10/29/2022 - SwindonPaul Likes this wine: 90 pointsDay 1: Decanted and tasted over the course of c. 3 hours. Pure blackcurrant on the nose and the palate and very little else; very primary in all aspects. Tannins not the problem here, possibly in a dumb phase? Feels like I've committed a tiny bit of infanticide. |
