Outstanding once again. This really needs some air to put on weight and give its full profile at this point. I suggest two hours of air or more to get this going, and it was best after slow ox under cork overnight.

1928 Château Beychevelle

Nose: Woodsy and spicy nose with sanded mahogany, espresso and cinnamon. Palate: Shockingly remains tannic, but that core of tannin is hanging onto beautiful notes of blackberry, chestnut, clove and spiced cherry.

A great wine from a strict vintage, that created a fantastic comparison with the 1929 beside it. Drank with EC.

Nose: Perfumed cherry compote, cigar, rose, tea, and graphite. Seductive nose that is ever changing. Palate: Soft and elegant on the palate with caramelized red currant, raspberries, caramel corn, toasted morello cherry and woody spice notes. Finish: great length still, and beautiful browned fruits, caramel and spice.

An absolutely charming wine that is a peak into how the glycerin centered structure of the 29s has ageed over the decades. Outstanding. Drank with EC below.

Nose: Iodine, Apricot, Molasses and some brown butter notes. Palate: Silky red berry fruit with brown butter, clove, tarragon and cigar wrapper notes. Lot of glycerin holding this together, and sweet cedar.

For my palate this was much more faded than the Beychevelle beside it, but still a really nice wine that demonstrates the pretty and seductive nature of the 1929's.

Sadly this was badly maderized. However in tasting the wine you could see the intense tannin and structure that was once there. Too bad.

Nose: Apricots, honey, botrytis, spice and chamomile notes. Very nice nose that is sappy and fragrant with a nice hint of botrytis decay. Palate: Bright orange blossom, apricot, honey and baked peach. Intense acidity and brightness throughout. Finish: Acidity clears the palate and keeps this very intense wine fresh.

A marvelous d'Yquem paired with Foie Gras Torchon.

1983 Château La Mission Haut-Brion

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend more

3/18/2024 - RockinCabs wrote: 94 points

Nose: Deep black fruit, cassis and amazing signature cigar tobacco on the nose. Perfume of leather, florals, stone and hot brick coming through. Such a Pessac nose as this opens. Palate: Focused dark fruit that quickly gives way to leather, old library, cedar and some faded red berry notes. Touch of VA here in the balsamic note, but it is not distracting. Finish: Closed a bit rough and ready with the age showing clearly in the tart black fruit and green tobacco notes.

This opened very shy and tight. Coiled, inky and almost a brooding saline note on the nose. This remains a favorite from LMBH that flies a bit under the big vintages, yet expresses the character of the chateau really well.

A rich, but balanced wine. Elegant poise with plum, damson, blackberry jam, gorgeous spice and minerally soils at its core. The herbal and stone notes in the finish are beautiful still.

The lavish oak is holding this back a bit at this point in its development as the fruit slides into middle age, and its potency is moving backward a bit. There should be more of the terroir coming out at this point, but the oak is a bit intrusive.

Good wine, but drink up. I'll hold one for the long term, but will plan on finishing these over the next 3-4 years.

I am glad that Rebecca Gibb notes the rs (3g) on her note as there was some debate at the table as to whether there was some there. Glad to have that detail as I write this up. Excellent wine.

2017 Base Bereche Reflet d'Antan is an outstanding champagne with richness, nutty depth, succulent apple and berry notes up front and a weighty mid-palate. This is a very exciting wine that has presence and nuance that deliver a total package.

Not a wallflower this is a powerful champagne that is drinking great now, but has a long time to go in the cellar. I really enjoyed this one. Enjoyed from Magnum

Nose: Leather, pencil, cedar and mint with Dark Straberry, Plum and dried bluberry notes. Palate: A bit stern and dry initially with quite a bit of tannin, but the fruit came in as it opened. Cedar, graphite, mint, blackberry and old library book. Well pitched acidity and a classic Napa meets Bordeaux profile. Finish: decent length and nice wood, smoke and spice with more eucalyptus in the finish.

This was from 3L and served at a party for my wife's 40th Birthday. Definitely about as good as this gets. Fresh, coiled and mostly secondary notes on the open, but gained over about 90 minutes.

1992 Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon

Oakville more

3/9/2024 - RockinCabs wrote: 94 points

Gorgeous garnet purple color, slight bricking at at the rim, but deep and bright at the core.

Nose is reticent for the first 10-15 minutes, but straightens up and shows a nice plum, blackberry, floral and spice tones. Lots of violets and cinnamon on the nose that enliven the dark fruit.

Palate is excellent. Fine silky mouthfeel with good weight, but not at all overbearing. The modest 13% abv gives just enough glycerin, but the overall freshness, herb garden, plum, cassis and leather notes lead. Detailed spice on the back end.

Finish is spicy with clove and cinnamon notes, and a great sweet plum that lingers. This is drinking around peak, but is on a plateau where it will be great for another 10-15 years if well stored. Classic 90's Napa before the ripness trend took over.

1969 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

3/4/2024 - RockinCabs wrote: 91 points

A really nice bright red fruited wine with spice, cigar tobacco, mint and some almond notes. Started with a bit of the BV "sherry" note, typical of these older bottles, but really cleaned up and came together into an elegant mature wine. Palate offering plum skin, cherry, mint and clove as this came together in glass.

Lighter bodied, high acidity, and slightly fragile fruit at this point. However it provides a nice historic reference point for the wines made by Andre in the early days of Napa's renaissance.

Nose: Leather, dark morello cherry, cigar tobacco, sage and mint tea notes. Great depth and cool soil notes. Palate: Plum, dark cherry and quince fruit with notes of spice. Mid palate begins delivering the leather, cherry fruit compote, kirsh and herb notes. Balanced and velvety feel in the midpalate with lift from the acidity. Finish: Lingers a long time with dark cherry, cocoa and sage notes. More tobacco and rustic leather as well.

This is a really nice glass at this point in time. On a great plateau for enjoyment, so dig in if you have these around. Randy Dunn made a great on in the later part of his tenure before Helen Turley joined the team.

Reserved and tight upon opening with a nicely balanced palate feel and dark fruit. Quite a bit of tannin, yet the bell pepper, earth and some florals find their way to the front. Hard to assess, but decent with dinner.

I am almost aligned with "Afields" there is not enough varietal character her for me to score it, and it stands somewhere between Loire and CA in the way it is made. Garzon needs to find the identity of this wine more clearly to make it express the vineyard.

1987 Livingston Moffett Cabernet Sauvignon Moffet Vineyard

Napa Valley more

2/23/2024 - RockinCabs wrote: 94 points

Nose: Opens up with a deep raspberry, pencil and spice perfume, and develops deep kirsch and plum notes as well. An advancing nose, but retains a delightful freshness about it.

Palate: Enters with waves of blueberry, black plum, raspberry liquor and spice notes. Glorious graphite, clove, cinnamon, and Chinese five spice notes in the mid palate are supported by a nicely weighted texture. Velvety feel gives the palate seriousness that is freshened by acidity and drive that perks up the secondary nuances of leather and library books.

Finish: Lengthy and spicy today with a fully resolved tannin profile. Elegant and fine in the end.

This is a wine that was made by Randy Dunn in the early days of Livingston Moffett. The vineyard was panted in 1969 on St. George roots stock so this wine is from mature vines. Unfortunate that this site was replanted as these old St. George plantings are proving to have long life and balance that is hard to comeby in Napa today.

Nose: cooked raspberry, alcohol, luxardo cherry and prune.
Palate: Begins actually seeming tired with bruised cherry, fig and browning notes. Ripe fruit, jammy and a bit of residual sugar. Finish: Cherry, blackberry jam and franchise, touch of sage as well. .

Overall this just does not work for me. There is a lot of wine that is made in this style far less expensive that give the full throttle, extracted experience just as well. Neither expressing the terroir, nor having much freshness.

Boozy and a bit clumsy.

This is an excellent blanc de noirs from Marguet. Deep color with just a bit of a pink note at the edge. Nose brings together blood orange, strawberry, grain and some herbal notes. Very focused acidity on the palate and nice fresh apple and orange notes, almost like tart cantaloupe. Great fresh notes in the finish with nuts and brioche. Great development ahead for this.

This was the first release from Vineyard 29, and would set the stage for Heidi Barrett to join in 1995 and make every more powerful and layered wines from this site. The terroir shines in this example made in a slightly more old fashioned style.
