Not the biggest fan of Bordeaux (50+% of your cellar), but I am sitting on about 10 cases of assorted '05s that I'll begin to crack open next year, and your TNs will be very helpful re: timing. Thanks.

    6/14/2019 6:31:00 PM - Nice to meet you Paulst. I am in California. We are downsizing so just moved out of my dream cellar. Kept the wine but now in a facility in Palm Desert. Very traumatic and took a bit of time just moving all of it. Notwithstanding, it made me plan tastings for the next 6 months. Gonna dig into some of those trophies and have some fun! Share your thoughts about French wine (you will love the ‘82 Ducru) but still lean to great burgundies for what I would want if stuck alone on a deserted island! John Robertson

    3/21/2017 10:44:00 PM - Regarding Oregon: I lived in Oregon when it was first starting out (about 7 producers in the Willamette Valley in those days), so have always had a fond spot for that area. Small family wineries in a rural setting, and still that way for many. I prefer European-styled wines, and Oregon is one of the areas in the "New World" that 'gets it' in that regard. There are a number of producers who pick early, going so far as chaptalizing even in a warm year, just to achieve the natural acidities that really add structure and elegance to the wine. Walter Scott, Eyrie, and a few others are worth searching out for those reasons. Happy hunting! aChave

    11/6/2016 11:19:00 AM - paulst: just got word that you are a fan. I am honored, especially looking at your cellar. I am in a tasting group that meets Fridays, and I get to taste most of my older Bordeaux's there. A member of our group had a 65th birthday recently, and broke out four '86 Bordeaux's, along with an '86 d'Yquem for the dessert course. We drank Leoville las Cases, Rausan-Segla, Mouton-Rothchild and Cos d'Esternel. My wife had been given a bottle of the '86 Mouton by her boss after her team had done well, and she hoped to drink it at her wedding. We forgot, but opened it on our 5th anniversary. My tasting note was limited to "So this is what all the fuss is about." I really couldn't add much more than that. This tasting of the Mouton brought back those memories, both of the occasion and the taste - it was just as good this time, best of the 4, really. Interestingly, the Cos was actually better out of the bottle, but faded quickly from sublime to merely wonderful, whereas the Mouton had plenty of staying power. I have to admit I am jealous of your older Bordeaux holdings. Enjoy. And again, thanks for noticing me.

    6/29/2014 2:16:00 PM - Dear Paulst I only have 2 bottles left of the 66 Haut Brion, :( but I did manage to snag 2 bottles of the 94, 75, 78 2001 and 2004 . Plus my drinking buddy has even more :)There is nothing more pleasing than a smooth aged bottle of bordeaux! I have a 82 Ausone as well., just waiting for a good reason to open it. Enjoy your great wines, it puts everything in perpective.

I will be drinking that for the first time, and a 66 Ausone (also for the first time) with a friend soon. I have determined that mature Bordeaux is the only wine that I will spend serious money on.
