Off the wine list at Husk Savannah for $86, this was an amazing bottle and consistent with ChairmanKao’s notes. Pale yellow, beautiful acidity, lemon, petrol, kiwi, chewy/oily mouthfeel and a finish that just keeps going for miles. Great bottle that seemed to have years of life ahead of it.

A viscous and supremely sweet wine so dense, concentrated, and mouth filling that you could fully enjoy drinking it from a eye dropper. Very close to a dessert featuring layers of apricot paste, golden raisins, and dates drizzled with clover honey. Yet so magnificently balanced by a citrus acidity that it manages to dance across the palate with the elegance and freshness of a ballet dancer. Finishes with a near endlessly entertaining aftertaste. Overall, a taste of Heaven on Earth.

Some honeysuckle and spice to the aroma. It is rich and layered, with a touch of the exotic and some fresh preserved lemon notes. It is complex, powerful and long. Drinking right in the zone but with enough in reserve for a few more years development.

Delicious, high acidity but well balanced by abundant slightly honeyed lemon, white peach and grapefruit. Medium plus body. Long and with some complexity. Drinking beautifully now, will probably improve for another two decades.

Really deep gold in color. Not at all oxidized. Honey, green apple, a little white pepper, smoky diesel. Nicely salty. Adequate acidity. This could use more cut, but it’s still delicious.

(from memory) Moderate to deep gold, perfumed bouquet of honeysuckle, lemongrass, and orchard fruit, bright but slightly thin fruit on the attack with layers of melon, candied lemon and honey on the palate, finishes with more melon and honey notes, bees wax and lingering candied citrus fruits

Note: Purchased two bottles in 2002 and partly-by-accident and partially on purpose rested both for a decade longer than WS would advise, and although the second bottle (TN reflects the second bottle) was noticeably better than the first, this is a true testament to the longevity of these Spätleses, still lively, fruit-driven but well balanced wine

Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of deep brown colour, with fading yellowish rim and legs.
Nose: Clean, with pronounced intensity aromas of citrus fruit of lemon peel, dried fruit of raisin and fig, stone fruit of apricot, floral notes of ginger flower, maturity notes of honey and savoury, oxidation notes of caramel and toffee, mineral notes of stony. The wine is fully developed.
Palate: Luscious with high acidity, the wine has low alcohol and full body, with pronounced intensity flavours of citrus fruit of lemon peel, stone fruit of apricot, dried fruit of raisin and fig, floral notes of honeysuckle. The wine has a long finish.
Conclusion: Outstanding German Riesling TBA with a very intense nose showing great complexity, despite its age there is still plenty of citrus peel and stone fruit, plus nice ginger flowers, ended up with the likeable dried fruit and caramel toffee, and development with good minerality and also savoury notes. The palate is vibrant, with unbelievably high acidity to balance very well the sweetness so making the wine not any bit of cloying, and in fact one would not believe its sugar level. Highly concentrated flavours and a really long finish, it is the pinnacle of sweet wine and can maintain for another 10-15 years.

Loved it. A lot is happening in this sweet desert . It looks like cognac - a lot ov nuts, honey, apple, raisins, a bit bitterness and oak. Wish i had more of these

Oldish flavour and taste, "Firne" quite obvious and competing with the dry fruits. On the other hand, the wine has to its favour the structure, the excellent balance between sweetness and acidity as well as the length. Still, given that this was an auction bottling and the bottle in excellent shape with almost no loss of volume, I had expected more.

Grosser Unterschied zwischen dem ersten Eindruck und nach mehreren Tagen (!) Belüftung. Beginnt mit Nase knapp mittlerer Intensität, süsse, beinahe gummiartige Frucht (Guayaba?). Öffent sich mit stärkerer Intensität und grösserer Komplexität: mineralische Noten, etwas Petrol in Kombination mit Frucht. Im Mund gutes Volumen und Konzentration, anfangsrelativ knappe Säure, starke Boytritisnote und bitterer, etwas unsauberer Ausklang bei gut mittlere Länge. This has really lost a lot of its luster with age. Low acidity, honey, a little petrol, lots of ripe stone fruit, all with a healthy dose of minerality. I expected more from an Erstes Gewächs, which seems to be the old Rheingau equivalent of Grosses Gewächs?

It’s a bit sweeter than the typical GG though, so either I’m wrong or the acidity has just faded that much. For $25 you can do better. Maybe it was worth it 5 years ago.

ABV: 13.5%. I really wanted to rate this wine a 99, but I think it still has room to improve beyond how it's tasting now. The nose immediately opens with a stoney/flinty minerality, followed by a complex fruit medley: Pomelo, green apple, kiwi, D'Anjou pear, papaya, white peach, and more. The acid on the mid-palate is spectacular, lifting the fruit profiles while harmonizing the minerality together and keeping everything intact. All of the flavor profiles are beautifully balanced as the acid continues to keep them dancing on the palate, and carries them over into the super lengthy finish that lasts for minutes. As I contemplate on the lengthy finish, my taste buds are salivating for another sip. Pretty sure that I have a few more bottles of this wine, which I plan to keep for at least another decade.
