1/22/2013 - Spaniard Likes this wine: 88 pointsGood but nothing to write home about. Ripe black fruits, leather and hints of mushroom/earthy notes. Very much alive (magnum). Should have easily lasted 10 more years. |

The silky mouthfeel attests this once was a great bottle but I waited too long to open it. My friends kindly helped me finish the bottle. It would not be fair to give this specific bottle a score. |

12/1/2012 - Spaniard wrote: 84 pointsDrink now. It will not get better with time. Decanting did not help the wine evolve through the night. The nose was powerful with a distinct black cherry jam aroma with undertones of pine. In mouth, the wine was overly muscular lacking the acidity to compensate for the 14.7% alc. This bottle will finish you before you finish the bottle. I found it very tiring. |

11/28/2012 - Spaniard Likes this wine: 90 pointsI decanted for an hour until it opened up and I loved it. Not sure if it has cellaring potential. From the 1st to the 4th hour, the wine could be easily confused with a high-end Napa wine (wouldn't it be fun to include it in a blind tasting for friends to guess?). The nose was very intense with ultra-ripe raspberries and French vanilla. Hard to notice anything else... In mouth, it is very well balanced, not muscular, with soft tannins that will cover your entire palate. The nose noticeably decays after the 4th hour. Don't wait that long to finish your bottle! |

11/25/2012 - Spaniard wrote: 86 pointsNot impressed. After decanted for 90 minutes, oak derived aromas such as dark chocolate & expresso were dominant and overshadowed any other note. Same oak dominance continued for the next 4 hrs. I cannot say the mouthfeel showed the characteristic elegance and silky texture typical of older Opus vintages (e.g. '81 or '85), but I can appreciate its structure, near-sweet tannins and long finish. I will not be surprised if this wine gets better in 5-10 yrs. |

11/24/2012 - Spaniard Likes this wine: 91 pointsVery good bottle but not quite as memorable as the '81. Black currants and dry cherries in the nose with tones of black pepper and violets in the distance which become more obvious by the 3rd hour. Not as oak dominated as the '81 or '82. Very soft, balanced and rounded mouth feel. It feels very much alive and, blinded, I would have easily mistaken this wine for another one 10 yrs younger. I am reaching the 4th hour and there are no signs of rapid oxidation (safe to decant). This is a bottle that I would love to taste again in 5 yrs. |

Initially, it had a cooked cabbage nose which took 30 minutes to go away. Then, I was not impressed with what stayed. Just OK . Very muted nose with tones of tobacco leaves and old wood. Nothing like the '81 I drank the day before. I should have opened this years ago. If you are holding one of these bottles, drink as soon as you can. |

11/21/2012 - Spaniard Likes this wine: 95 pointsOutstanding! I rushed to open this bottle because of all the reports I have been reading about its drinking window expiration. I did not decant. First taste after been open for 10 minutes was very reassuring. Phew! It is everything I would have hoped from this winery: lean & elegant. Nose is powerful and dominated by cedar, leather and tobacco. No fruit (unless you have a good imagination!). Mouthfeel is silky with soft tannins and.... a structure/acidity to keep this wine alive for 5 more years! Not the longest finish but I am not complaining. I wish I could share this with my wine buddies but I was not expecting this wine to be alive by now. Two hours later the wine was still singing...but you could slightly notice the oxidation creeping in. Four hours later, the little I had left in the bottle was already off. In conclusion: fabulous if consumed within 2 hours after opening and do NOT decant. |
