6/21/2023 - kenh Likes this wine: 93 pointsStood up a day beforehand. Double decanted back in to bottle about an hour before meal. Wonderful Saint-Julien flowers on open. Robe was a clear purple black with only a hint of color pulling away at the sides of the glass. Excellent sheeting on a vigorous swirl. |

10/1/2011 - kenh wrote: 87 pointsMy palate was off tonight. Though the wine smelled lovely it was sour and bitter to my taste. I revisited after champagne and a wonderful escargot with wild mushrooms. With my palate thus recalibrated the wine was good. Black cherry, chocolate and tea, but tannic. |

4/23/2007 - kenh wrote: 84 pointsProbably should have had this 5 years ago. Some traces of Cote-Rotie remain among tired fruit and residual tanin. At a push, red fruit and cnnamon, leather and smoke. This wine was good, but not better than good. |

3/23/2007 - kenh wrote: 92 pointsDark ruby red, with brown and brick at the edges. Initially red and black fruit in the nose, followed by a brief period of nothing in the nose at all. The wine was opened as I removed it from 57 degree storage. AS it warmed to drinking temperature it took on aromas of honey, mustard, brown sugar, pepper, red fruit, and catsup. (In short, it smelled, and the smell followed through to the taste, like KC Masterpiece barbeque sauce). Well balanced, gorgeous nose, decent weight, glycerin, and acid. I think this wine would probably last another 5 years, but it's never going to be better than it is right now. |

2/23/2007 - kenh wrote: 94 pointsDecanted off sediment and poured. Clear garnet/ruby robe, a touch of burnt orange, pulling away from the rim. A nose of cloves, apple skins, and pinot funk on opening bloomed into cherry, white flowers and cedar. In the mouth, clove, cinnamon, and raspberries, then with time, stunning sweetly ripe fruit, with bracing acidity and a silky texture. With more time in the glass it is more layered and delicious, not showing a hint of its 14.1% alc. I've only had one other Pinot from the Pisoni vineyard, and that younger and more primary than this, but, this seems to share a commonality with that wine. Only a bit of bitterness in the back palate and aftertaste keep this from being extraordinary. |

2/19/2007 - kenh wrote: 88 pointsPopped and poured. Initially too cold (from the cellar) the wine was muted, with alcohol and heat showing morethan fruit. Twnety minutes after opening, with food, the wine was fruity, textured and tasty. Finishing the bottle after supper, the wine opened into a huge, multicolored beast, with melted licorice, cedar, raspberries, and vannilla. Delicious nose, delicious palate, long delicous finish. Unfortunately, the wine just kept gettng bigger and bigger and bigger - until eventually, it wasn't comfortable to put in my mouth. I don't know if this wine will tone down with time, but at this age, it is so big that it is not comfortable for two to finsih in a night. |

2001 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir BotellaSta. Rita Hills more |
2/10/2007 - kenh wrote: 89 pointsServed at a dinner party to accompany Turducken, grilled green beans, Shepherds Pie, and three cheese quiche. The Sea Smoke was bigger, more tannic and less approachable than the Loring consumed the same evening. The Botella is dark garnet, clear, black and some red fruit in the nose. Balance grip and tannin in the mout, with lush red fruit. I consumed both of my bottles this night: a shame, becasue I don't think this wine is going to show at it's best for 3-4 years. |
