2012 Château Sociando-MalletHaut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more |
3/15/2016 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 91 pointsThis wine tonight was very pleasant pop and pour but even better 3 hours later opened up in the glass. Looks and smells great in the glass. 13% alc. Lovely mixture of ripe red and some black fruits. Restrained oak and good balanced tannin with a lovely consistent finish. Merlot lends some ripe red plums and cab franc lovely bouquet. Such a poised wine you can drink now (decant 2hrs) or cellar. Good value for a top notch St Estephe. |

2010 Château Ferran Pessac-LéognanRed Bordeaux Blend more |
3/8/2016 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 91 pointsThis wine is very pleasant. 2010 a good year reflects in nice fruit of the wine with balancing acidity but gentle. The tannin has softened and the oak is restrained. Very easy to drink and enjoy this wine today. Tendancy to write off the wine as light-medium weight, femanine, and elegant. There is some underlying structure to carry the wine to pair nicely with meat dishes and yes it can still be enjoyed with pork, rabbit, hare and even duck as the fruit is very attractive. If you can buy a bottle of the Reserve de Ferran do not hesitate - awesome. |

2001 Castelgiocondo (Marchesi de' Frescobaldi) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Ripe al ConventoSangiovese more |
2/24/2016 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 97 pointsThis was a great bottle of Riserva (not to be confused with the standard Brunello). It opened perfectly with only a little sediment to decant off. We drank it 5 hours later and I think it benefited from the double decant (poured back and re-seal the blinded original bottle until at the table). Big rich flavours of perfectly ripe and juicy black fruits, licorice, some tobacco and a wonderful mouthfilling texture with a long finish. Its drinking well but will last a decade more no problem. Friends thought it may be Bordeaux and perhaps not exhibiting a lot of Sangiovese flavour because its so full-bodied and woven into a bold dark red wine, yet refined tannins, balanced fruit and acidity and so enjoyable with main course food (entrees for Americans). $225 well spent in this case. Really superb. My last bottle. |

2010 Château Simon Cuvée ExceptionelleBarsac Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more |
2/18/2016 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 92 pointsPlease, this winery is Barsac and very proud of it. It's just down the road from Ch Coutet. Wineries in Barsac have approval to say they are Sauternes, but also distinguish themselves as Barsac. Typically Barsac wines are a bit less opulent than Sauternes, a little more elegant and fresh. Depending on what people prefer, Barsac wines can be rated lower but the good ones (and most of them are) can be more enjoyable than many Sauternes. Simon is once again a rising star. Resulting from the new enthusiasm of the daughters there is new effort in the vineyards and for the production process. Simon is back right up where it should be. Cuvee Exceptionelle is to be appreciated as a barrel selection of the best from the good years and in limited quantities. At cellar door its remarkable value at less than 50% premium, but that won't last once the word gets out. The result is an exceptional wine and 2010 was one of those years for Ch Simon. Sweet honeyed pineapple fruit with a touch of zingy grapefruit, the botrytis is evident but not prominent (will preserve during cellaring), medium body but great balance to provide good length. The advantage over the regular Simon is the slightly more creamy texture and slightly more prominent botrytis and acid balance. The best barrels sure taste better than the rest and this is the business. Seek it out if you can, you will not be disappointed. BTW 2011 is another great year with more Exceptionelle. Lucky Ch Simon! Lucky us! |

2012 Sevenhill Cellars St IgnatiusClare Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more |
2/17/2016 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 94 pointsBeautiful colour, bouquet, palate, balance and length. Medium to full bodied this wine has everything going for it. Flavorful and multi-faceted, there are distinctly Australian characteristics (full of fruit) but also some cedar, pencil lead, tobacco and tea leaf. Its not influenced by vanillin oak and has excellent tannin structure, with some balanced fruit and acidity carrying the finish. A clean Aussie version of a good Bordeaux just lacking "meat" flavor if you like that. Been drinking this now for two years and it gets better and better. Screwcap and will cellar for maybe 20 years but so enjoyable now. AU$34 retail outstanding value. |

2011 Château Roûmieu-LacosteSauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more |
2/10/2016 - F1NUT wrote: 93 pointsDeclaration: I love Sauternes/Barsac. With that in mind, this Barsac has Sauternes written all over it. Heaps of creamy honey but with citrus balance. The nose and palate has lots of Botrytis meaning this wine will cellar for 20-30 yrs. Some may find this a little too prominent but I love it as part of the character, it just goes a little beyond peppermint so give it plenty of decanting time. Long palate, clean finish, the acid is great but due to the unxious palate is hidden until the finish. Superb achievement. Vineyard is just down the road from Coutet and Doisy Daene if you are looking for terroir comparisons. |

2009 Carmes de RieussecSauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more |
12/23/2015 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 91 pointsThis is excellent. There is lovely viscosity and richness to this typical Sauternes. Its deceptive. Yes it is sweet but also has the botrytis influence and for my palate has just enough acidity to clean the palate with a nice length of nice flavours. I think it is easy to dismiss this wine at this price but I think it it a truly great vintage, for what is supposed to be declassified Rieussec itself - a bargain then. It is reportedly 13.5% so excellent balance. Aside from the beautiful and typical Sauternes palate, this has a touch of orange, so if you like orange marmalade this is great. For a second wine this is superb, obviously a great year. I adore it as its very impressive drinking now but should also cellar 10 years. Try it! Do you find this review helpful? 2009 Marquis de CalonSt. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more |
6/29/2015 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 91 pointsA big surprise how generous the blackcurrant and blackberry fruit is in this wine. Still representing its terroir but much more approachable in this very good year. I didn't find my bottle over-ripe but it certainly is fully ripe. Tannins are just in balance but this needs quite a lot of time to deliver a smooth drink I think. A great result from this estate delivering a very high value for money proposition. |

2007 Mas de la Deveze Côtes du Roussillon Villages Vieilles VignesGrenache Blend, Grenache more |
6/10/2015 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 90 pointsSurprisingly a somewhat new world style now with lovely fruit (typical of the grape variety mix) and a bit of mineral beneath a medium plus density - good length and good balance. There is some fine sediment at the end of the bottle showing the strong winemaking of this vintage. This wine was well reviewed on release and I'm glad I bought 6 but now down to last two. Still going strong maybe 5 years left. |

2011 Château Doisy-VédrinesSauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more |
5/23/2015 - F1NUT wrote: flawedTonight's bottle is corked. The most horrible dank mildew wallboard smell and dull tasting wine. I can actually taste the delights that all the other reviews are noting, particularly what would presumably be delicious pineapple, but the rotten cardboard taste is predominant. Such a disappointment. When are the Bordelaise going to realise that their best prospects for wines that cellar well and open in good condition are NOT with the dreaded Portuguese bark supplies. |

5/23/2015 - F1NUT Likes this wine: 94 pointsThis bottle under (a soft) cork, resisting easy pullout. But the contents smell/taste perfect once remains of cork extracted and wine filtered. (Good residual tannins from the bottle too). |
