Bert Simon

Producer website

Although he has quit making wine, Bert Simon is still a source for some remarkable juice. Those of you that have gotten some of the gems we've promoted in the past know what we're talking about. Some have stellar reviews and even better ones with no reviews at all. Today we have made another withdrawal from what has been a treasure trove of spectacular wines at equally spectacular prices. For those that haven't heard the story yet, let us catch you up.

We have been working with importer Rudi Wiest for more than a quarter century and know his producers very well. Bert Simon was the sole owner of the Herrenberg and Wurzberg vineyards in the Saar until he sold them in 2006. He wasn't a producer that was in the top echelon every year, but when he was'on,' it was magic (and it wasn't necessarily always in the 'heralded' vintages). In 1989, 1997, and 1999, he turned in tremendous performances, particularly with the dessert pradikat levels, which is his strong suit.

A few years ago after Bert hung up his thief and retired, he started to sell chunks of his remaining inventory. Perhaps that's how 401Ks work for German vintners, but whatever the case, his cellar has given up some lovely offerings at great prices.
