Winery Comments:
Once again The Banshee is the wild one of the bunch. We’ve got a west facing block that we have planted to Grenache and Mourvedre. We chose to use tall stakes and tight spacing to incorporate a bit of a modified head train system. This allows us to really be selective when deciding which clusters to drop based on their position in the canopy and amount of sun exposure. As a result we get fantastic maturity without excess shrivel and raisining and therefore lower sugars. This expresses itself as briary fruit over layers of dried herbs and spice. This hillside makes up 40% of the blend with a cool north facing hillside of Syrah at 60% providing the framework around which the Grenache and Mourvedre weave their magic. For 2010 the Grenache and Mourvedre were co-fermented with roughly 40% stem inclusion and aged in 320L and 500L puncheons. The Syrah was fermented separately with around 30% on stems and aged in 228L barrels. Really wanting to let the fruit and spice shine through we limited the new oak to around 25%. Once the blend was made in late August, the wine was returned to the barrels from which they came and remained on their lees until bottling mid May 2012. This wine is scheduled for release September 2013. With the extra time in bottle we expect it to be showing quite nice, but like all Torrin wines it will no doubt age beautifully.
