2001 Annie's Lane Shiraz Copper Trail

See wine details

Coppertrail Shiraz 2001 / / In the early days of winemaking in the Clare Valley the local community would often help each other during busy times in the season. After delivering lunches to workers pruning vines in the middle of winter one year, Annie Wayman’s horse-drawn cart struck difficulty in negotiating the muddy track back to her cottage. From that day on, the track has been affectionately known as Annie’s Lane, and today borders one of our major vineyards in the Clare Valley. / / Tasting Note: The 2001 Annie’s Lane Shiraz displays intense aromas of lifted blackberry and spice integrated with subtle smoky oak. The palate is rich, soft and full bodied with sweet black cherry flavours. Fine supple tannins contribute to a balanced mouth feel and excellent length. / / Suggested food: Char grilled porterhouse steak with swiss brown mushroom sauce. / / Cellaring: Enjoy now or cellar for five to seven years. / / Winemaker: Caroline Dunn. / / Viticulture: A little over half of the fruit from this wine was sourced from the historic Quelltaler vineyards in the Watervale sub-region. The balance was purchased from selected growers throughout the Clare Valley. Good winter to early spring rains and warm conditions in November and December encouraged healthy vine growth. Periods of above average heat in January resulted in red wines, which are a little lighter than usual but with vibrant colours and intense fruit flavours. / / Vinification: Following crushing and de stemming the wine was fermented in a combination of open, static and rotary fermenters, with some parcels completing fermentation in oak, while others underwent extended maceration on skins for up to 21 days. The use of different styles of fermentation contribute to the overall complexity of the wine, which is further enhanced by partial maturation in American and French oak barrels for 16 months. Some parcels were left unoaked to maximise fruit expression. / / Technical Analysis / / Alcohol: 13.0% pH: 3.45 / Acidity: 6.6 g/L Residual Sugar: 2.7g/l / Harvest Date: March - April 2001 Bottling Date: Novenber 2002 / / Annie’s Lane Web Site
