December 14, 2009 - Though a thoroughly great wine, I am still disappointed, given the hype the wine receives as well as its showing against the more complex and interesting 2004 Pico Madama. The fruit and oak were massive, with waves of vanilla-flavored blueberry syrup lingering in the palate, but the wine was extremely one-dimensional. I like modern styled, ripe wines as long as they balance the fruit with freshness and complexity, while at least reflecting the region from which they come. The Clio, the big and opulent, isn't complex, isn't fresh and is completely unreflective of either Jumilla or the 30 percent Monastrell wine: simply put this wine tasted like a top-notch, boring Napa cabernet sauvignon. All this brings me to wonder whether or not this was a representative bottle, or that perhaps this wine's luster had already faded.
