April 13, 2010 - Popped and poured. My expectations are very low.
Color is dark purple.
Nose shows sour cranberry, red plum, and oak. Hints of barnyard and some smokiness as the wine opens.
Palate matches the nose with sour red fruits, some oakiness. Not much up front. Midpalate and finish showing the red fruits and a little hint of sweetness on the back end.
It's an okay weeknight wine. In fact, as the wine opens there's a bit more complexity coming through, and what I'm finding is a more old-world profile, which is a nice surprise. While I was initially thinking this would be an average wine, I'm holding out hope it can improve with some air time. Stay tuned.
Okay, final analysis: It improved slightly, but then nose dived back down into mediocrity in a short time. There are too many better wines at this price point to settle for this.
