September 6, 2011 - I'm still not sure whether I'm a firm believer in Domaine de la Mordorée wine making style. Mind you, I have plenty of them in my cellar, in many vintages. And I've been to the domaine many times, tasted from barrel, and in their youth these wines are amazing - overwhelming complex fruit. But I think they might work their tannins too hard. Is it overextraction? Extended maceration? Too much oak dose? I don't know. At a timepoint where most 2004s are drinking beautifully, this wine has a pretty rough edge of tannins that do not seem to budge. Although the wine in itself is very well made, nice (but not overly so) aromatics, good intensity and length, but the roughness is troublesome. And honestly, this is a note I could write regarding many if not most of the Mordorée vintages. Or am I impatient? Time will literally tell.
