April 13, 2012 - This is undoubtedly outstanding wine that brings a lot of excitement to the table. However, it will infuriate people who dispair of the high alcohol, worked style of Napa cabernet. Currently this has nothing to do with the Bordeaux benchmark. Massive, rich and porty on the nose, this wine is layered but it ultimately comes across as monolithic - one needs to searching for the layers. Candied fennel, dried thyme, cigar box and extremely ripe plums are bound to a hugely tannic framework - one that became more and more apparent as the wine opened up. The wine comes across as warm as well. Not a great match with sous vide lamb with tapenade on a bean and radish salad - one that worked extremely well with the Coleraine 05 and Larrivet Haut Brion 00 earlier in the week. I will not touch my next bottle for 5 years - hoping that the wine gains further nuance and a sense of transparency that will allow one to get into the fruit complexity. I don't think that the fruit is going to fade on this.... I hope this will evolve in the same manner as the 95 Maiden. For now and for its style (if you like this ostentatious kind of thing) 92+.
