Community Tasting Note

  • spineguy Does not like this wine: 80 points

June 9, 2013 - Lemon juice with a bit of fizz. Perhaps a bad bottle but upon reviewing other tasting notes it may be consistent with them. Not complex. Decent finish but not spectacular. I don't understand the hype.

6/10/13, 8:39 AM - The 96 La Grade Dame was spectacular just after release in the 2007 timeframe. However, they seemed to misjudge how powerful the 96 vintage was and overdid it a bit. As a result, this champagne started going downhill way to early and will only get worse. I always tell anyone who may be holding these bottles to drink up, as they are getting worse by the year. If you want a great La Grande Dame experience, try the new 2004 vintage. That is top notch stuff and already drinking extremely well.

6/10/13, 6:53 PM - As I have not had La Grande Dame before and I am unsure if it is a bad bottle, past its prime, or I need further education, I will take it upon myself to find another bottle and retry it. I may then change my review and score.

6/10/13, 7:19 PM - Spineguy - As someone who has lots of experience with the 1996 La Grande Dame, I would not retry. Your experience is unfortunately more of what people find with this champagne today, rather than the exception. Please do not spend any more money on this year. Instead, please try the 2004 La Grande Dame which is a wonderful wine and is already drinking great. The 1996 version was just misjudged and went over the hill early. Let me know if you have any questions. Your first reaction was correct.
