November 20, 2013 - Had the 1999 Clape, Jamet, Burgeau, Clusel Roch, Rostaing and Gallet together. 6 fairly traditional producers. All decanted 4 hours. Jamet was clearly best of the bunch. Gallet was however the big surprise, because we hadn't heard much from this producer. It was a clean fresh wine with an interesting and complex nose. Nose is more herbs driven (thyme, bay leaf) than the Jamet and Rostaing (blood and meat). Medum body with a sweet and clean attack. Good balance, very easy to drink. A truly traditional producer with no small barriques or new wood.

2/2/14, 2:16 PM - We've managed to visit the domaine a few times, and have enjoyed chatting up the Gallet (Father and Son) at the annual Marché aux Vin. They've indicated they've used around only 5% new oak most years, enough essentially only to rotate out barrels too damaged or decrepit for future use. But there have been a few exceptions, (the '99 included) where the harvest and fermentations indicated being able to carry as much as 15%-20% new oak - and do.

2/2/14, 2:31 PM - I feel Gallet is very under-appreciated, even by most avid Rhone followers. Their wines are superbly aromatic and reflect plantings of the sereine entirely. Elegant yet complex in most years but lacking the oak blanket that so many crave. Fran Kysela's "distribution problems" (ahem) didn't help sell the Gallet wine around here either. Hard to obtain.
