November 21, 2013 - Blind CDP tasting at Bistro du Midi:

Decanted for 3 hours and served blind. Tasted alongside the 2001, 2003 and 2005 vintages of this wine. The 2008 was the clear winner amongst all of these vintages, and we were all shocked when the vintage was revealed.

Clearly the best 2008 CDP I have tasted, I have enjoyed this wine on many occasions. Outstanding and very consistent producer, year in and year out.

1/14/14, 10:24 PM - I had a similar experience last May, when the 2008 Clos des Papes went head-to-head with 2007 Mordoree CnDP Reine de Bois. The 2008 CdP surprised us by how expressive it was on the nose and on how it steadily developed depth on palate. It held up well and outshined the 2007 Mordoree for some. This wine inspired me to try other 2008's. No, the 2008 Clos des Papes is clearly the best so far.

1/15/14, 5:05 AM - Thank you very much for your feedback. Believe it or not, this experience has encouraged me to try other 2008 CDP's, although I am yet to find anything that can come close to the Clos des Papes.

Do you have any suggestions of other 2008 CDP's which you felt came close in terms of quality to that of the Clos des Papes? I have some of the Clos St Jean higher end CDP's from the same vintage, which I am planning to open up within the next few weeks, to compare and contrast.

The Mordoree CDP's have always been one of my personal favorites. Which reminds me its time to post my note on the 1998 that I consumed last month.

1/16/14, 3:24 AM - I'm sure there are more experienced tasters than I. My only really enjoyable and surprising experience has been the 2008 Clos des Papes. While the WA rating for Clos Saint-Jean Deus-Ex Machina was 95 vs. CdP's 91, the complexity of the bouquet and the surprisingly voluptuous palate put the CdP well beyond its higher rated counterpart. Perhaps some other 2008 CnDP's may be better, but I'll have to continue to taste to compare. You are right, Clos des Papes is very consistent. I buy them consistently and I look to back-fill as well.
