January 21, 2014 - When I last tasted this wine, I was floored by it. This time, I found it to be quite nice but it wasn't the transcendent experience that I remembered. A function of raised expectations? Also possible that a decant is required as it was showing better 90 minutes after opening than when we started. A big wine, but not over the top. Lush but clean, with chocolate and vanilla and a lot of rich fruit. The monastrell tweaks it just enough where it won't be mistaken for a big rich cab, but that remains the dominant flavor profile. I will give the next one a two hour decant and approach it without the expectation that it would blow me away. It's certainly a very fine wine in any case -- but the last bottle struck me as much more impressive.
