March 11, 2014 - Press Lunch with Puri Mancebo, Export Director of Vega Sicilia (Les Amis): The 2008 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Valbuena 5° is medium bright purple in colour with a slightly ruby rim. The nose is rather bright with blackcurrants alongside jammy currants, red cherries with a back-end spice.

Beautifully soft and round entry of gentle jammy red fruits with impeccable balance and structure. Soft but powerful in style, good drive to a lasting finish. A wine that one might frown upon just to pull apart the truly integrated flavours. Nice gentle woodiness coming up from the mid-palate with lovely underlying acidit that really delivers the wine on a memorable finish. Reminds one of a well-made Bordeaux, with a Spanish spin. Very young now, but given its structure and built, the wine definitely has many years ahead - and its secondary characteristics will definitely be a rewarding one for the patient drinkers. 91+
