May 15, 2014 - (Mich&Bo@LangtonsVI) Funky leather, barnyard, black pepper, but surprisingly on the quiet side for a Barrosa. Juicy acidity, clean fruits, tight tannins, ashy, and surprisingly empty at the moment. Will need plenty of time to emerge. (Rather outta character - could there be a *possibility* of bottleshock or inadequate decanting with this tasting?)

6/1/14, 2:52 AM - FWIW Sounds like bottle shock or the need for a LONG decant. Better still (not applicable to you) a re-taste over few nights (refridgerated.) I've had it twice in the last 12 months and it has always been deeply fruited and approachable.

6/1/14, 3:58 AM - startinoz, you're probably right - it might very well have just been popped and poured that night, given the context, and quite possibly shipped in just for the event.

6/1/14, 4:37 AM - I think so :) Mind you, most of the big shiraz/syrahs I've had lately (a Hermitage, a HoG, a Langi and a host from McLaren Vale) were horribly closed at first. It almost seems to be a good thing for newly released serious examples! Strangely, some experts don't seem mention it, nor stalkiness, eucalypt, funkiness, petrol.....

6/1/14, 9:58 AM - I agree! I get the impression that there's been a Oz-wide trend towards early drinkability for these big guns, which may account for a thinner-than-expected showing in infancy. Hmmm.

6/8/14, 10:52 PM - That's true. In the case of these top wines though, I think that the fact that they are so closed at first sort of shows how slowly they are evolving and thus will cellar for a very long time. Still, with your BP example, I think bottle shock is the reason.
Keep up the good note writing. Hard life, isn't it? ;) -

6/9/14, 7:49 PM - Many thanks, Startinoz!
I'll add a caveat to my tasting note, and hopefully I'll get to taste another bottle soon, properly decanted and all. Cheers!
