June 18, 2014 - No formal notes, but: if you're curious about the differences between the 2009 and 2010 Bordeaux, grab one bottle each of the 2009 and 2010 Senejac, decant each of them for 4 hours, and have a glass. Then have a glass on day two. And on day three. It's amazing that this stuff comes from the same vineyard. Each of them is very good, very satisfying, and they are very different profiles. The other TNs here give you a good idea of what those profiles are, but Senejac is one of the only wines I can think of that you can compare vintages for about $60 and see such an extreme difference. I'm looking forward to seeing how they each taste in 5 and 10 years. I'm puzzled by why this is $35 and the 2010 is $20 -- I believe they are really similar in what they give you -- but even $35 is good QPR. Seriously, buy them both and leave notes when you taste.

6/18/14, 9:52 PM - Yeah, I'm having trouble doing the math -- the 2010 is half the price of the 2009. Not sure how that happened but I shouldn't ask questions or even really hit "save and done" and let everyone else in on that fact.

6/18/14, 9:56 PM - so how did you rate the 2010 vs the 2009?

  • ledocq commented:

6/18/14, 9:59 PM - The 2009 is definitely a better drinker now, especially on the second night. The 2010 is a little clumsy now. But the 2010 has the structure, and isn't as fruit dominated, and the tannins are mighty and vast -- it almost made me laugh to drink them side-by-side, as it was such a textbook description of how the two vintages compare and contrast. My hunch is that in 2020, the '10 will be a winner, but I've only been in this racket for a couple of years, so I could well be wrong. If you want something now, go for the '09; if you want to see how much can be packed into a $20 investment in the future, have the '10. And let me know what you think.

6/18/14, 10:44 PM - Many thanks. I wasn't a fan of the 2009 (frankly). Posted a CT note. Am thinking of taking 5 cases of the 2010 to give to guests in a couple of years who don't know anything about wine - saves giving them anything very good! At GBP10/bottle it's supermarket priced...

6/19/14, 6:00 AM - FYI - Senejec has always been a sub-$20 wine. It shot up to $35+ due to Parker giving it a 93 point score. The 2010 received an 89 from him so pricing is back to normal in that vintage.

6/19/14, 6:04 AM - I only rated the 2009 about 89pts. Sold all my cases when the price nearly doubled. Haven't tried the 2010 though

6/19/14, 6:09 AM - One reason I tried these was the connection to Pontet Canet -- I knew these wouldn't taste anything like it, but I figured the teams' attention to detail would come through, and it does. JulianK, if I think about it hard, I'd say I wasn't impressed with the 2009 when I had my first sip (as I tend to have one taste right out of the bottle) -- too fruity -- but I didn't include that in my TN. It did get appreciably better with a lot of air and time. It's possible the 2009 is twice the wine that 2010 is, but I don't think so. 2010 seems like a great value. I wouldn't touch 2011 until someone proves we should.
