August 2, 2014 - Smoke on nose. Smooth on palate with a tar finish. Intense fruit, firm tannins and a good structure. New style Cahors, learning from Argentina and washington, with that extra earthiness nicely tamed and integrated. Maybe a 90

10/26/16, 5:08 AM - It is Washington and Argentina that are learning a lot from Cahors to get better, not vice versa. Best examples are made from the Frenchies and Spanish who consult the Argentinians and learn them that Mallbec is more then oak and alcohol. Unless you don't like Charors and prefer the industrial neutral wines of the once callled new, now old world.

10/26/16, 8:58 AM - I agree with you that the "new world" needs to tame the oak and alcohol, and not just in Argentina or Washington, and appreciate that new/more oak is not always the answer. This goes even more for alcohol levels (one of my pet peeves)
My comparison is intended to be with 60's and 70's Cahors which in many cases needed a return to basics to produce a balanced wine. The old black wines, when good, had a long life and lot to be said for them, but many, if I recall correctly, had not enough fruit to survive the tannin.
That said, the European input into S America has certainly lifted the game; just as Europe has lifted the quality of its basic offerings over the last 40 years. It is a two way street and the interesting winemakers are exploring and learning from each other
