Community Tasting Note

November 1, 2014 - These just arrived, listed at 12.8% and consistently for me the best syrah in the Copain line up with the last vintage (2010) having produced what I believe to be one of, if not the best Copain syrah to date. I opened this about an hour ago, and I'll finish it tomorrow so consider this opening note to be an intro. This was a little leaner on first opening, but with air, it's filling in nicely. Along with some pepper in the aromatic, I can smell and taste the Brosseau dirt here, the wine giving off a powdered rock aromatic and the beautiful Brosseau chalky minerality in the palate. The fruit here mixes a cross between black raspberry and blueberry, what I'd expect in this vintage and its cooler impact. The fruit purity here is scary good, like freshly picked, pure, tangy. When it finishes, there is a note of game, smoke and some light licorice. I got high hopes for this wine again tomorrow...onto Day 2, drinking at a room temp of 68. Aromatically similar to y/day but an added touch of garrigue today. The palate mixes is some game and a touch of blood, yet what the wine is about at this stage is the tangy, zesty fruit and the Brosseau minerality, both carrying the wine for a long finish. This will be a unique vintage for Brosseau and some are not going to like the wine if they agree with what I describe. It's walking towards that place where pinot and syrah merge, like the 2010 Copain Baker Ranch from a few years back. If you like my descriptors and have a few bottles around, get one open and see if you agree. Ultimately, this wine needs a couple years for the Brosseau terroir to settle into the wine.

11/2/14, 7:40 AM - Nice to hear from you, Tom. I enjoy reading your notes and keep up with you on my side, as well.

My son in law and daughter are coming over later for dinner and we'll finish the bottle and I'll update the note. I'm eager to see how it progressed over night. Has that Brosseau terroir and yet a pure sense of fruit that was strong, reminding a little of the 2010 Baker Ranch.
