Community Tasting Note

February 28, 2015 - We bought this as a special treat from a private cellar-sale, so have never been entirely sure how well it had been treated, so didn't want to leave this too long. However never quite found the right time to open it either, and so last night (after reading about it in the Forum) drank as part of OTBN.

Opened about 2.5 hrs before the meal, and as per some good advice from this community poured a half glass and left in the bottle to see how much air/time seemed to be required. Looked so young, would never ever guess that this was 24 yrs old. And from the first sniff this was very much open for business, plums, cherry, blackberrys and other lush, ripe sweet fruits with just a touch of sweet vanilla oak, but then with a bit more air this developed further to show some fabulous complimentary savoury notes of spice, grilled meat and leather....delicious bouquet that kept evolving all evening.

Same on the palate...the first taste (just after pouring) was surprisingly fruity, and there was a bit of acid standing out in the finish, but after an hour or so it seemed to come together...the most silky, luxurious of wines, but with good acidity that livened up the finish (which was long and fabulous). Hard not to hold on to the glass and keep sipping....was going to try and save a half glass overnight (for investigative purposes), alas our willpower failed us all too easily.

Life affirming wine that I wish I could buy a case of and follow it for several years to come, but we are very happy and privileged to enjoy this snapshot of loveliness for OTBN....we'll be joining this tradition every year - great idea.
