April 25, 2015 - Wines With A View (Capitol Grille Tasting Event) (The Spire): This was one of my favorites of the tasting. Totally open and accessible, seems to be maturing early and opening up beautifully. Cedar and smoke scents swirl in the glass, with violets and damp earth as well. Very complex, dynamic and energetic structure. Lots of Italian style earth and leather. Powerful tannins. Nothing like a French or Napa Cabernet Franc. This would be hard to criticize.

9/12/15, 9:29 PM - Hi Doc90-From your comments are you indicating this wine is ready to drink? How would a couple years of aging help? Dave

9/13/15, 7:48 AM - Hey Dave- this has the structure to age so waiting a few years would probably help it. However, I found it to be surprisingly expressive and enjoyable now. If you have more than one, I would open one now and enjoy it. But if you only have one, there's absolutely no rush as this has the stamina to lay down for a while. Hope that helped.

9/13/15, 8:01 AM - Thanks-yes your comments have helped greatly. I only have one double magnum-but maybe I should pick up some 750's. Do you think that is a good idea. Never tried this wine before. Dave

9/13/15, 8:12 AM - I would maybe get one bottle to try it, and then you will know how much you like it and how long you want to let your large format bottle sit. I wouldn't say this is a "thrilling" wine, but I thought it was deserving of 93 pts given it's depth, earth, and "soul".

9/13/15, 8:21 AM - Thanks-I bought the double magnum for a big party so I was not looking for something with a wow factor but more along the lines-Oh-this wine is good. Your comments have really helped me out-THANKS! Dave

1/12/16, 9:13 PM - Hmmm-wondering if this should be the double magnum I open for my 70th birthday in four years. I have a couple of other double magnums I am also considering. Dave

  • Doc90 commented:

1/13/16, 9:40 AM - Dave-What are the other double magnums? This is a great wine, but I couldn't guarantee it would live up to the expectations of your 70th birthday wine. Although I do believe it would be better than any New World Cab Franc.

1/16/16, 4:06 PM - I have 2005 Clos l'Église (Pomerol) and 2008 Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici Riserva Antonio. Is the 2005 Clos l'Église (Pomerol) a better idea. I appreciate your candor as it will help me make a better decision. Dave

  • Doc90 commented:

1/16/16, 4:26 PM - Dave-yes either of those two sound promising. I get excited about Radici, but I'm not sure if that 2008 will be ready in four years; probably with a heavy decanting. Regardless it sounds like you have got some great wine options for your party.
