January 10, 2016 - A chance to drink history. What a magical experience from a time the World was busy picking itself up after World War 2.

Carefully using the ah-so, the top 7/8's of the cork still seprated and we were forced to push the remainder in and strain into a decanter. I loved the old brown glass with the visible seams.

How thrilled we were to find this wine in good shape. Brick colored edges and a slightly foggy, crimson/ purple hew. The initial nose was leather, earth, and menthol. The palate was initially muted and the fruit came forward after 15-20 minutes as it woke up from it's long nap.

Smooth dark Pomerol fruit with a hint of spice, giving a nod to the cab franc. This wine went through a series of quick transformations over the next hour with one of the highlights around 30 minutes in. This was like a mythical beast waking from hibernation. 45 minutes later, the fruit receded and acid dominated for a bit as it continued it's journey. Medium soft body and oh so elegant.

I am haunted by this wine. There were subtle complexities that elude my ability to express. Something about the way it filled the corners of your mouth to tease you with its finesse. That red dress that slips past the corner of your eye.

I know I will never see this wine again but what a memory I shall keep of our romance on a January night in 2016.
