Community Tasting Note

February 27, 2016 - Nonblind with dinner. Red fruit and herb notes with a dominant Pegau funk. Red berry and licorice flavors with spice and funk in spades. It's a bit much. The last few Pegau I have tasted, I've found the levels of funk/brett to be too much. It's one thing to have a funk, but this just isn't clean winemaking.

3/15/16, 5:44 AM - Darn! I quite enjoyed this when tasted at the Domaine in 2013. The funk was there but not too much of it. It's always hard to control in transit, so who knows. I still have hope for my bottles.

PS - this is maybe the first time ever you and I haven't aligned closely on score.

3/16/16, 5:52 AM - I enjoyed this one in the past, well, 89 vs the 87 I gave this bottle, but I am wondering if I am becoming less tolerant of the "Pegau funk" or if this is a case of bottle variation, where one is more/less funky than the next. The '08 vintage has had a good bit of variation for me and this was just the 2nd bottle of the '11 I've tasted so time will tell. I don't mind barnyard, but these have shown a funk that I liken to either wet, rotting vegetation and also to dried field hay/straw, neither of which I care for if it's too strong. I've been told by my chemist friends that it depends upon the particular strain of brettanomyces as to which particular aroma it gives off. Anyway...hope all is well up north! One of these days Domino and I will be making a trip up your way for an offline and hopefully our schedules will align. Cheers!
