    April 24, 2016 - WSET practice note.

deep purple with a ruby rim. slow legs and tears noted.

the nose is clean with medium+ intensity with strong french oak aromas. intense black primary fruit of blackberry and black cherry. medium intensity kernal aromas of coffee bean and black chocolate from the french oak. Hints of smokey minerals and cured meats.

on the palate, the wine is dry with medium- acidity, medium tannins, and medium+ alchahol. the full bodied wine shows a silky texture with fine grained tannins and generous oak characteristics. Pronounced black priimary fruit ranging from ripe black cherry to cooked blackberry and plum. medium smoked meat notes and rich coffee bean and chocolate notes linger on the lone finish. there is an underlying stoney minerality but this is very big and new world style wine. The wine is developing but the acid and tannisn are well integrated on the long finish. the alcahol shows a bit of heat on opening.

overall the wine is fruit driven and oaky but with good complexity. For fans of big Parker reds, this will be a hit. More satisfying and dense than many other highly rated mencias i've tasted. thumbs up!
