Community Tasting Note

  • texanoblues Likes this wine: 95 points

May 28, 2016 - Ruby-red and clear with faint bricking. Primarily bright cherry, with some leather, violets, roses, and tart lemon/grapefruit citrus notes. On the palate, this was lean and mean. Structure dominated by acidity and alcohol, with fine-grained, powdery tannins as well. Very long cherry, balsamic finish that ends with some really unique tart, citrus notes.

This bottle was perhaps the best classical, traditional expression of sangiovese I've had. There are others I have enjoyed due to some exotic flavors/aromas, and others I have enjoyed due to degree of extraction or tannins. But this Poggione stood out as being simply an outstanding traditional Brunello. Really, a wine that shows off the grape, the terroir, the vintage, and the skill of the people who made it. A solid, reference quality, Brunello.

    I don't disagree with RP's 98, but for me: 95-96pts.

BTW, this was not a PnP bottle. Initially, it was too much dominated by acid. I definitely experienced that which Jancis called an "acidic crunch" finish. Thankfully, 18hrs in a stopped decanter changed everything. The "acidic crunch" became a beautiful, mouth-watering, citrus lift.

You're really tempting me. I have a 3L of this (signed by Leopoldo) which will be the centerpiece on my tasting table for many years to come - if I can resist the urge to drink it too soon. Cheers!

Boy that's a tough call! So you've got 3L of this staring you in the face at your dinner table? That's torture!

This was one of those bottles that was glorious, thrilling, and exciting in its youth but would have been warm, and profound with age.

I guess it just depends what experience you're craving. Seeing as yours is large format, would probably be wise to sweat it out, and wait.

    Cheers!

5/29/16, 12:51 AM - Thanks for your note and rating. We tasted last year alongside several other 2010 Brunellos. Definitely fared well in a star-studded crowd. We enjoyed your note, but we will be joining Bam_Man waiting to sip our lowly 750mls...3L clearly is deserving a fairly long wait. Patience is, sadly, a temping virtue.

6/24/16, 3:33 PM - If you wait another 5 or so years, this wine will be worth the 98 rating.
