September 11, 2016 - Double decanted for 9 hours before drinking. Very reticent on the nose, some volatility, a touch of floral, apricot jam, slate. later a charred stout-like note came through, but never an expressive bouquet. Medium to full bodied, great palate presence, sweet red fruits, raspberry, pepper, fresh earth. The finish was long with a crisp acidity that helped with the balance. Slightly hot from the alcohol, tannins mostly resolved, a bit of bitterness in the end. It was not ponderous given the high alcohol, but not sure why that's a compliment (why is the alcohol always so high?). Great purity, very ripe, well made structured wine, but just not my cup of tea. It was good, but rather over the top and this is a cold vintage Saxum. Think I'm done with these guys. At $100 a bottle, time to drop off the mailing list.
