January 8, 2017 - First coravinned pour, single blind tasted against the 2009 Croix de Beaucaillou. The 2010 had a more Pauillac personality with more black fruit such as blackberry, pencil lead, dark oak, and a masculine palate. I was able to successfully guess which was which based on those traits.

For me, the palate is not quite ready, with a lot of tightness and tannins, and definitely benefits with air. However, the nose is just wondrous. So much complexity and evolution occurred with 4 hours of air. At times there was more red fruit, black cherry, and blue fruit notes, I got black pepper, different shades of oak and cigar, some dried herbs.

The 2010, for me is better than the 2009. I do agree that the 2009s in general are a bit nicer on the palate now, but the nose complexity of the 2010s is just amazing at this stage. And the 2010s seems destined to eclipse the 2009 in every way in the long term.

I tried the 2010 Grand Vin at a release tasting and it was really phenomenal. I'm really looking forward to trying it again soon. I think the 2010 Croix is actually more complex on the nose than the 2009 Grand Vin tried last week, but the 2009 Grand Vin is better on the palate, and it is a more pleasurable to drink now. They are all fabulous though.
