January 27, 2017 - At face value, this is a wine with medium intensity on both the nose and palate, medium body, alcohol, acid and tannin, but it is so much better and more elegant that. Despite having a fruit profile than spans more deep red to black, this has a bit of a rustic Burgundy feel. Very complex and it is at times floral, but also showing a bit of green stemminess, which isn't unlike unsmoked pot. There are cherries and blackberries, but also notes of olives, pepper and anise. There is a bit of spiciness, but no oak notes to speak of. This has an absolutely silky mouthfeel. If you're aiming for a ripe California or Aussie Shiraz style, take a pass on this. This really straddles the fence of elegance and rusticity. This was great right out of the bottle, but did open up a bit over the course of an hour or so. This will hold for several years, but I wouldn't hesitate to jump in now. A total steal at $35.
