February 24, 2017 - My wife and I opened this wine for the Annual Open That Bottle (OTBN) night. We've owned this bottle for more than 40 years. Over the years it has been moved and often poorly cellared. Figuring that the wine had long ago turned to vinegar I was never going to open it until reading Dorothy Gaiter's recent OBTN blog.
I was surprised that the cork was in good shape and came out in one piece with an "ah so" wine opener. Also, the wine was still up to the base of the neck.
When poured, the wine was red brick in color and it initially gave off a funky smell along with cigar box and some leather. After swirling and sitting the "funky" was gone and replaced with dark currants and plumb. In the mouth, there were notes of tobacco, herbs, some dark fruit and fine tannin. We drank it over a couple hours and saved a couple glasses for the next day. The fruit became more raisin-like the following day. The wine was still alive and delicious! It would be an understatement to say that we were happily shocked by this old nearly forgotten Boudreaux!
