March 4, 2017 - Another bottle in excellent condition courtesy of WineBid. The color is starting to advance since there is definite browning at the rim. Lovely fragrant ripe berry aroma that took a while to come out and then faded after an hour, which makes me question the longevity of this wine. (Based on my experiences with the '53, '59 and '61, I do not think Margaux ages as well as other First Growths.) Excellent sweetness on the palate at first which also dried out somewhat after an hour. Harmonious and very fine with no further upside.

4/2/17, 7:23 PM - Hello SDR. Thanks for your TN. Two questions if you don't mind. You stated aroma took a while to come out and then faded after an hour. How long should I decant the bottle? Second question, When do you think the end of the drinking window on this bottle. Thanks a bunch.

4/3/17, 4:17 PM - Congratulations on having a bottle of '82 Margaux, a variable but potentially great wine.
I do not give any Bordeaux of this age time in a carafe although I do decant off the sediment.
As for longevity, bottles of '82 Margaux like this one should be drunk within the next 5 years but I have had more youthful ones that could last 10 - 15 more years but not improve. If you have one, do not hesitate to open it soon. Happy drinking.

2/26/22, 7:56 PM - Hi sdh- came across this TN tonight. Have to disagree with you regarding Ch Margaux longevity. I can understand that reaction based on 1961 - 61 Margaux in my experience is weaker than most of its peers. But 53 (which I have also had) stood up quite well. And 1928, which I had in the Mid 1990s and around 2018, was amazingly youthful in the first case and far from dead in the second. My experience with 1982 has been variable, but well provenanced bottles have the potential to last another decade before declining. I will agree with you that 1982 is not going to get better though. FWIW 1983 is not at maturity yet IMO. I bet the great years of the 21st century will last a long long time. Thank you for your thoughtful notes!

2/26/22, 8:48 PM - Interesting perspective, JJYoyo. I tasted the ‘62 tonight, which was also weak but maybe a bit better than the ‘61. A ‘59 recently was also undistinguished and tired. The ‘70s was not a good decade for the Château until 1978. Agree that the variable ‘82 and the excellent ‘83 still have plenty of life. The ‘53 was my Bordeaux epiphany but that was many years ago. Glad your experience has been better.
