August 26, 2017 - A Barbecue on the Terraces (Our home, Hamburg): From a well stored half bottle, a gift from a friend of origin, vintage is not labeled, but indication of origin from the bodega, very balanced creamy and fresh showing, nutty, rich, filligree, delicate, very persistent, ending very long and lively with some butter cream on the palate, a wine revelation! Never tried such an impressing Rioja blanco before, ****-*****, about 93- 96+

    8/29/17, 8:38 AM - Hi Pat,

yes until now this was my most impressive classic Rioja blanco!

As i have met some CT-users from spain, they initiated me in this very special world. The bodegas do not fill much of this great bottles.

The palate is quite rich, energetic and sublime, but if you like this style overwhelming.
And it is very different to Riesling.

Marques de Murrieta has "just" released its Castello Ygay Gran Reserva Especial blanco 1986! It stayed in oak for 21 years!

I do not know if RIoja blancos are available in the US. But if possible, try a very classic "young"Reserva blanco 2003 or 2004 from R. Lopez De Heredia, in Europe available for about 25-30€. Cheers Christian

As always, a very insightful and helpful comment. Thank you! I am able to find the 2004 Reserva from LRA/R. López de Heredia for about USD$45, so surprisingly not much of a premium over the European pricing.

    All the best,
    Pat
