February 8, 2018 - Haut Brion Vertical -1998 to 2009 (The Grill Room at the Rosewood DC): Most polished and classic wine of the flight. Very precise and harmonious nose displaying cassis, red currant jam, licorice, tobacco, lead pencil, lactic and mineral. Beautifully integrated sensual palate, very finely layered subtle red and black fruit, silky and seamless, very fine tannins and a seamless long finish with a hint of lead pencil at the end. This is a beautiful classic claret that nicely expresses the 01 vintage character that we love. It is the sort a wine that you can drink all night.

2/10/18, 5:01 AM - Thanks for the note...debating whether to open my only bottle of this, what would you estimate to be an optimal drinking window? Sounds open for business today, but do you see more upside to waiting? Thanks

2/10/18, 9:43 AM - For my palate, most Bordeaux wine can age for a long time. IMO, the 60s and the 70s are very weak decades, i.e. high yields and irregular ripeness, yet a lot of the wines are still enjoyable. Therefore, it really comes down to your preference. The 01 is drinking beautifully. However, there is not a lot of tertiary notes like cedar, leather and tobacco. The fruit may also get sweeter and mellower with another decade of cellaring. I hope this helps.
