Community Tasting Note

March 24, 2018 - Other Reds (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): N: Fragrant flowers, berries, poss smoke

P: Med body; Nice frt met by some puckerish astringency which SLOWLY morphs into a LONG, very, VERY slightly astringent finish with hints of swtness. NEEDS into if not through '19, then drinking for 3 yrs more. My VG/VG+. 93 pts Guia Repsol, 92+ WA, 92 Suckling, 90 WS, 85 @ The Decanter World Wine Awards, & 15.5/20 El Mundo Vino. [This vendor's $18.95 puts it in the middle of the 2nd quartile of wine-searcher's LARGE listing.]

6/21/18, 11:52 AM - SRH, very helpful note. Up here in BC Canada this runs the equivalent of USD32 after taxes almost two bottles worth in San Diego! Will definitely lay it down through 2019 - its in angular chunks right now.

8/14/18, 5:04 PM - Vinomazing, as this was part of a themed flight @ 1 of the 2 shops where I routinely taste, I can say for certain that it WASN'T decanted. How long that particular bottle was open is impossible to say, as it could be anywhere from opened to make my pour to 4 hrs previously! Yet another variable: The wines are served in small tasting glasses, which I sometimes don't even GET to for an hr or so after they've been served to me. [At this particular shop I commonly taste ≈25 wines.]

Soooooo... based upon my note of 3/24/18, IF I were to pop one in EARLY '19, I'm thinking I might decant 15-30 min prior, which would allow me time to do a REPEAT decant *if* it still seemed "tight" after #1. On the other hand, IF it matured FASTER than I'd anticipated, such a short period of aeration wouldn't be sufficient to send it OVER the edge. ;)

    Hope that helps! :)

8/14/18, 11:20 PM - This is most helpful advice, thank you for sharing your full on experience and decanting tips on this wine, and for the 2nd decant option now aware of. Many thanks SRH!
