I have never decanted a Sauternes, or seen a Sauternes decanted. Sauternes seem to drink well young, and then they become an awkward teenager for a awhile until they blossom into their second life. I would have expected this Sauternes to drink well and still be in the "young" phase. I have also heard that Coutet needs time. So maybe they don't drink well young? If so, then why did it garner so much attention already? I will say that a humble 2006 did quite well a few months ago.

4/11/18, 4:41 PM - I never think of it either, although I typically do not drink young Sauternes. I will say I was too far gone to even evaluate it during dinner, but I did pour some the next day and thought it was pretty good, i.e., nice balance between sweetness and acidity. Also, there is the possibility of bottle variation (we can try another in a few months). I think it received so much attention because of it QPR. It is by far the most inexpensive Sauternes I own. I hope (and believe) it will continue to improve for many years though! For now, I would score it 91+...with the belief that has the potential to improve 3-4 pts.
