May 26, 2018 - Giacosa weekend - dinner at Masseria (Masseria, DC): Imposing big scale wine. Explosive nose displaying decadent black cherry, dry cherry, crème de cassis, ink, licorice, rose, tar and crushed rock. Incredible concentration, layers upon layers of decadent yet pure cherry fruit, silky and polished, strong acidity and mineral, very pronounced yet very fine tannins and an unbelievably long intense red fruit and tar driven finish. The most concentrated and structured wine of the evening. It is reaching the youthful peak but will improve for at least two more decades.

12/9/18, 9:23 AM - Thanks for the note, was this pop-and-pour or did you open before or decant?

12/9/18, 10:41 AM - More than likely pop and pour. But the meals lasted five to six hours.

12/9/18, 1:09 PM - Decanting Barolo and Barbaresco for a several hours or more is an interesting topic. I am in the minority in this regard. When pop and pour/splash decant, the wine shows less iron/mineral and is not as detailed. However, I really love the rich and opulent fruit note and a hint of caramel.
