Community Tasting Note

July 25, 2018 - If you were led to believe this was a 95 point wine I understand your disappointment. If you taste it for what it is - a $12-$15 bottle Rioja that can age 8-10 years from vintage, it's a nice wine.

Sampled over 3 nights and didn't degrade much. Medium red color. Cherry, black cherry, red currants & sweet tobacco on nose. Similar flavor profile on palate. Medium body, medium+ acidity and medium tannins / finish. 90+/-

Excellent QPR and good traditional Rioja.

7/28/18, 6:00 AM - I have come to completely disregard any ratings from Decanter. Just like James Halliday and Luca Maroni, they give away 95 point (or higher) scores like penny candy. James Suckling is almost as bad.

10/11/18, 6:40 PM - I haven't had this vintage yet (it's up on WTSO right now and I just ordered some), but I would agree with this assessment of this wine. The '12 is drinking earlier (now), but generally I think these are great at around 8-10 yrs.

Also agree with the pro reviews comment, although interestingly, Suckling gave this one an 84 and said "drink up." Go figure. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

10/13/18, 12:13 PM - I first had the '04 or '01 vintage purchased from WTSO. This is a nice traditional Rioja to lay down at a killer price. I threw this in a ringer in a high end Spanish tasting and while not of the same caliber of the other wines, it did not stand out as a "cheap" wine. Enjoy!

1/4/19, 2:08 PM - I expected a 95 pt wine and came to realise that this is maybe 90. Maybe. As previously commented, Decanter gives away points like crazy. Luca Maroni is perhaps the worst. His 97 is everyone else’s 88.

2/1/19, 7:56 AM - Rioja crianzas and reservas are best when relatively young, unlike Bordeaux which can age spectacularly. Six months after bottling this Rioja probably rated 95 pts. Don't forget that the wine press and media critics are invited to assess these Riojas before they are released to the public - hence they get to taste a wine which is invariably more concentrated, potent, vibrant and bustling with fruit than when it is on the market a year or two later.
