September 17, 2018 - It must have been 1997 or 1998. I had been collecting wines for my fledgling cellar for two or three years. I was also reading wine magazines and the reports of the 1994 Port vintage were coming out. I recall being on Park Avenue after work, planning on visiting wine shops around Manhattan to buy two bottles of the Dow’s, three of the Grahams, etc. This Vesuvio was one of those purchases, and those ‘94 vintage ports became one of the foundations of my cellar, and they continue to be, two decades later. I popped this bottle because, while packing up my cellar for a move, I thought it showed signs of leakage (it turned out to be fine).

The palate is very blue/black fruited, with cassis and blackberry liqueur, and a mouthfeel that is pure 1970s velour, very sexy. As the wine airs, some redder fruits emerge. This is much more blue/black fruited and not nearly as secondary as a half bottle of ‘94 Warre’s last week. This is great on the first and second nights, loses some focus by the third. Very enjoyable.
