October 6, 2018 - On opening, decanted. Great colour. Very glossy. Slightly subdued nose, but with a definite fresh mushroom note and a hint of truffle. Not barnyard, but definitely mushroom. On the palate, rather subdued and a bit hollow to start, and not easily identifiable as predominantly merlot.
Decanted for one hour, and more notes of typical merlot start emerging. Plums. The mushrooms recede. A bit of briary dark fruit. On the palate, rather subtle limestone and mineral notes. Really great balance. Seems to get bigger on the length than on the attack.
After 2.5 hours, the nose is typical merlot, red apple peel. On the palate, fine tannins, dry middle, mineral, sour cherry. Long finish.
Three hours. Some baking spices and Chinese spices start to show through on the nose. Still red apple nose.
4 hours, a little mushroom returns to the nose. Otherwise, the red apple peel remains.
Five hours. More of the same, but tannins getting more pronounced, finer, and more persistent. Dry finish. Very long.
This will be stunning years to come.
Throw it back in the cellar and wait until 2020.
