Community Tasting Note

  • Deux Chevaux Does not like this wine:

December 13, 2018 - Medium golden. And that’s the best thing we can say. This was downright unpleasant, and we finished it only because having paid so much, we were unwilling to give up on it. But by the fourth day (and tasting each day in between) the tar/smoke/rubber/aspects had become only more, and not less, pronounced. “Struck match” — for sure. Hint of sulphur, too. We have one more more, and yikes, I see 560+ bottles in CT inventory. Does anyone hold out realistic hope for this?

12/16/18, 8:32 AM - Hello Deux Chevaux, I have never been a particular fan of Bergstrom's chardonnays but this has certainly been the most scathing review that I ever saw of them. I have 2 or 3 bottles in my cellar and will open one for Christmas and then give my opinion...
Could be, of course, that you just had an "off"bottle...
    Cheers! Bandreas

12/16/18, 9:54 AM - Hi Bandreas, I truly wish you better luck. This experience with the 2015 was likely influenced by our similar experience with the 2014. As my CT notes for that show, we had a lovely tasting of the 2014 at the winery in June 2017, and it was fantastic at that time. We bought two bottles, and opened one a few months later, in November 2017. My CT note on that is a slightly stepped down version of my recent 2015 review. This leads me to believe that our experience was not attributed to bottle variation, but to being dramatically out of sync with the style of this wine. If others like it — lovely. The world is vast!

4/27/21, 7:18 AM - Hi again Bandreas, contemplating opening our last, I just returned to this thread and noticed that, unfortunately, we have not been alone in finding this, shall we say, less than pleasant. With some trepidation, we will try again fairly soon.

    4/27/21, 9:38 AM - Hello Deux Chevaux,
I will be really interested to hear what your experience is tonight..
I still have two of those bottles in my cellar and have no idea if and when I should open one..
if worst comes to worst I could always pour them into the vinegar jug but that would make quite an expensive vinegar; something like a "barrel reserve".
Anyway, thanks for touching base! I look forward to hearing from you.
    Cheers
    Bandreas
