Community Tasting Note

December 28, 2018 - A different animal from the wonderfully concentrated ‘15, this exhibits noir fruit, raspberry, pork shoulder, violets, red lava, stout beer and chocolate orchid. There’s an idealistic purity of fruit, with beauty and precision. Very silky tannnins and the finish is savory, with length. I love the aftertaste of mixed berries and herbs. Decanted for three hours and capable of a long study. The body is paradoxically transparent and suave, yet there’s density and a raciness. Drink 2022 -.

Like barnyard, granite, sea breeze or other descriptors used to discuss nuances of a wine, the reference has more to do with the nose. I have experienced many wines with barnyard aromatics, however, they do not necessarily taste like it - thankfully.

I spent a fair amount of time on the Big Island of Hawaii, and when you walking on a relatively recent lava bed, pick up a crumbling lava rock, grind it in your hands, that is the nuance that I get. There’s nothing quite like it. Red lava from Mount St. Helens is quite different in its own right as well.
