Community Tasting Note

  • Cristal2000 Likes this wine: 97 points

March 24, 2019 - Had this next to a 16 Vice Versa Dr Crane BBS and 16 Purlieu BTK. The nose on this 100% Cabernet wine is super unique and unusual. Not very Cab like at all. We were all trying to get a handle on it, and we could not quite describe it, but will give it a shot. Aromas of pine needles, Hungarian oak, iron, boysenberry and tilled soil. On the pallet this wine is texturally perfect, with an absolutely seamless delivery of opulent and unctuous mostly blue/red fruit with the most polished and integrated tannins you can imagine. Totally weightless. Shows solid structure and a nice full mid pallet with lots of spice and mineral driven notes. The finish is where this didn't quite live up to the VV BBS, as it was about 30 secs, but super enjoyable. Ahead of the Purlieu but behind the VV in this tasting.

3/25/19, 2:07 PM - Nice flight of wines! Probably what I would expect in terms of the order, but wonder if the Maybach is in a dumb phase (tough to say given the 97 point rating) and would show even better in a couple of years.

3/25/19, 2:15 PM - That's possible, but I don' think so. Even with the nose that way, a couple of people had it #1 for a while and it showed quite well. And I noticed the same thing on the 2015 nose. Possibly a site characteristic but totally unique. At first I had it pegged as almost port-like, but that wasn't 100% accurate.

3/25/19, 2:25 PM - I had the 2014 on release and it was probably a bit more traditional at that point. But will be fascinating to see as it continues to develop over time. Thank you.

3/28/19, 1:11 PM - I had the 14 about a week ago and had a similar thought as to finish. Excellent wine though. I had a 16 Carter from same Weitz vineyard a couple of days ago and the Maybach was better albeit it was a 16 and the Carter seemed a bit dumb compared to earlier.

3/28/19, 2:02 PM - HowellMountainCru: As much as I love Carter, I've always found the Materium to be a better overall wine then their Weitz. I think perhaps Maybach should pick slightly earlier to avoid some of the overripe almost port-like qualities at times, but otherwise, hard to find much fault in it - especially the 13-14 editions. Just got the 16, so will have to test out one of those little baby half bottles soon. :)
