April 15, 2019 - Disappointing. After a one hour decant the nose on this won’t come out to play at all. Barnyard and awkward herbal aromas indicate a poor nose on this wine. The palate is much better. Full bodied and clearly a big wine not showing much age. There are flavors of black currant, blackberry, tobacco and oak made in a fairly new world style that generally works. Did I catch this at an awkward phase that it will come out of. Possibly but that is not generally been my experience with California cabs.

5/5/19, 7:42 PM - See my review tonight. I flipped your numbers for a 98. Maybe you got a bad bottle? Or were you expecting a big Cali fruit bomb? Just asking. This is the first bottle of this I've had in nearly 2 years and I scored it 2 points higher than last time. To me, it's a welcomed break from all the sweet over the top '15 and '16 Cali fruit bombs out there right now.

5/5/19, 10:30 PM - Well I definitely wasn’t expecting or hoping for a fruit bomb. I actually was quite optimistic about the wine- heard good things and have a few more bottles of this and the Howell Mountain. Admittedly, I seem to have a different tasting experience than you and others but that is what I experienced - a fairly awkward wine with a substandard nose. There are a couple possibilities - 1. The bottle had some taint. If I recall this is a bottle I bought at the winery and somehow it has ended up in my cellar in Hong Kong where I live so compared to most of my wines it’s travelled a lot. 2. Maybe I didn’t decant enough? It is a big wine and I have it around an hour but maybe that is not enough. Anyway I’ll wait a year and try another with an open mind. Anyway thanks for your post!

5/6/19, 5:24 AM - Good to know. I didn't think you were looking for a fruit bomb, but today you never know!...maybe the travel did impact it? This and the '08 Mt. Veeder are just terrific wines. I hope some of your other bottles come through for you. The Howell Mtn is just a little darker and fruitier overall, also very nice but the Veeder is just a notch above most years.
