    April 20, 2019 - Materium 2016 vs. Carter OG 2016 side-by-side.

Given CT scores consistently in the 97-100 range for these two great wines I wanted to use each bottle simultaneously as a benchmark for the other. I was trying to avoid finding one wine “a perfect 100” one week and then later liking the other wine better without showing a relative preference. Given the near religious experience one can find in great wines, I decided Easter weekend was appropriate in my quest for perfection. To assist me with my quest I enlisted the help of my daughter, taking a break from her CPA exams to help in my own audit.

Upon opening, both wines seemed tight. The OG was a brooding beast, though slightly acidic. The Materium was super smooth, but not as substantial as the OG. Decided to slow ox for a few hours, then decant. The extra time benefited the Materium far more than the OG, allowing the wine to really come to life and show off it’s impressive structure. Not to be outdone, the OG established itself as a truly transformational beauty of a wine.

Of particular note was how much better the Materium performed at the the 6-7 hour mark, while the OG was consistently great.

My sense is that the OG slightly outshines the Materium at this point in time, but the Materium seems to be more suited for time in the cellar. I would suggest that the OG is much closer now to its optimal drinking window than is the Materium, but I would not be at all surprised if 3-5 years from now the Materium develops into the better wine.

    For now - Materium 97, OG 99

4/26/19, 5:51 PM - Nice notes TXRDW, I appreciate the comparisons of those two heavy weights. I have a bottle of the 2013 Maybach Amoenus Cabernet in the cellar, but I have never tried the Materium. I'm on their mailing list, and I will at some point, try the Materium but the Carter wines are so good (the Weitz in particular) and less expensive, so theirs no big hurry on my end. Thanks for your thoughts. BTW, the 2016 O.G. is as close to perfect as it gets in my opinion.

4/26/19, 10:03 PM - Thanks, Yack Man. The OG is absolutely one of my favorites and I’ve been wanting to try the Weitz. Interestingly, I ended up finishing the OG and Materium the day after I posted this note and the Materium actually improved a bit more relative to the OG. The OG still ended up on top, but my sense is that the Materium will age better. This was my first Maybach ever, after a little less than a two year wait to get on the mailing list. I’m not sure how long you’ve been waiting, but I sent a few emails inquiring about the wait and all of a sudden I received a response along with an allocation. I got the feeling that my multiple inquiries led to a direct response from Chris letting me in. You might try sending him a follow-up note next January around the time of the next release.
