June 23, 2019 - Decided to try the Fortuna after recently consuming the OG and the Verdad, the three Carter wines I bought in a mixed case. The Fortuna is absolutely stunning given the QPR. Fresh and concentrated, the lighter red fruit jumps out at you while showcasing an alluring mixture of raspberry, cherry, strawberry, plum and a hint of spice. While a bit lighter than its bigger brothers, I can’t remember a better wine under $100. The visceral reaction I get from the 2016 Fortuna is an overwhelming sense of freshness. Really a great wine irrespective of price point.

6/24/19, 12:56 PM - Thanks, Badmonkey. The upcoming 2017 will also be interesting at Carter, especially given the timing of their price increase. I suspect their wines will be fine nonetheless. In a strange way if they are willing to go up in price on a suspect vintage it gives me confidence that smoke taint isn’t going to be an issue.

6/24/19, 6:34 PM - I spoke with the winemaker last summer during a tasting of Myriad/Quivet cabs and he said he picked the grapes really early with the 2017 vintage so he apparently avoided many of the weather related issues that others faced. Although I agree that it was a little surprising to see a price increase with some of their 2017 cabs. Take care.

6/25/19, 11:50 AM - I just visited Carter and tasted the 2017 lineup a few weeks back. They are all super tight right now, but I think they just need more time in the bottle. The wines should be fine for the long haul given the vintage, but was a little annoyed at the price increase :/
